The Herkimer Board of Education accepted more than $2 million in bids for the completion of the second phase of the district's capital construction project earlier this month.

The following bids were awarded by the school board:

  • National Building and Restoration Corp., of Utica, for general construction contract work with a base bid of $815,000. There are seven alternate bids from National if there is funding leftover, which total $290,250. That brings the total bid to $1,105,250.
  • H. J. Brandeles Corporation, of Utica, for heating, ventilation and air conditioning work for a total of $494,000.
  • H. J. Brandeles Corporation, of Utica, for the plumbing contract for a total of $132,000.
  • Oneida Electrical Contractors, of Utica, for a base bid of $445,938. There are three alternate bids which total $224,158. This brings the total bid to $670,096.

The bids all together total $2,401,346 in work for the elementary and junior-senior high school buildings. The bids — which were awarded to the lowest bidder — were accepted by all of the board members present at the Sept. 12 meeting.

According to a draft of the minutes from the meeting, deputy Superintendent Dick Young informed the board the contracts were awarded "contingent upon receipt of proper bonding and insurance certifications (including review and approval by the district's legal and insurance counsel) and other required documents from the successful bidder." Also, Young presented the information from King and King Architects, of Syracuse, about the bids received by the district on Sept. 6.

Interim Herkimer Central School Superintendent Gary Tutty said he anticipates the work to start before the start of the winter season and to be completed by the end of the school year.

In 2009, the school district underwent a $11.9 million EXCEL project. The work included improvements to the auditorium, electrical work, roofing repairs, window replacements, concrete work and additional security cameras at both buildings.
